Course Overview:

Course time:  1 hour 

“Suicide Awareness and Prevention” is designed to help learners understand suicide in the corrections setting.

This course will increase suicide awareness and give tools to corrections staff to recognize, reduce, and prevent suicides in jail.  This eLearning course covers crisis situations, manipulation, communication skills, suicide prevention screening guidelines and techniques to help the staff recognize suicidal inmates.  Legal staff will also cover what the expectations are of the staff in preventing suicides in their facility.

Instructors

Craig Stowell, Retired Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

Craig is a United States Air Force Veteran, having served as a Security Police Officer and Instructor/trainer.

Craig has served as both a POST Certified Police Officer and Reserve Police Officer in the State of Minnesota. While working as a Police Officer also became certified as a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician. He worked on the ambulance crew for the City of Paynesville and also the city of Billings Montana, where he became a Flight Medic for “Corporate Air” and HELP Helicopter Service. Upon returning to Minnesota, he worked as an EMT-Intermediate for Murphy Ambulance in St Cloud.

Craig has also served as the Public Safety Director for First Union Management and the Community Service Officer for St Cloud School District #742.

Craig has worked at the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office since 2004, where he serves as a Court Officer and Staff Instructor. Craig is a Certified Crisis Intervention Officer/Tactical Certified EMT on the Special Operations Response Team.

Craig is a staff EMS Instructor for St. Cloud Technical and Community College since 2013 and has been a Staff Instructor Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association since 2014.

Jason Hiveley, Attorney at Law

Jason Hiveley is a Partner with Iverson Reuvers Condon and has been with the firm since 2003. He practices in the defense of municipal liability claims, civil rights lawsuits and commercial litigation. Jason has handled numerous jury trials in State and Federal Court and has argued several times before the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. He also conducts training seminars for law enforcement agencies across the state.

Prior to attending law school, Jason served in the United States Navy for 4 years as an Intelligence Specialist at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska.

Jason is currently a member of the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association, the MDLA Governmental Liability Committee, and the Minnesota State and Hennepin County Bar Associations.
