Module Overview 

This module addresses one of the most essential characteristics of a leader, Ethics.  A leader who is not ethical, particularly in the law enforcement profession cannot effectively lead other ethical law enforcement professionals.  In this module, Dr. Trautman will identify the main causes of unethical behavior in law enforcement organizations and how it can be effectively combated.

Module Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module student should be able to:

  • Identify the 3 C’s of Ethical Leadership.
  • Identify the most frequent ways that law enforcement professionals lose their careers.
  • Understand why an agency’s Mission Statement is so important in establishing leadership and ethics throughout the organization.

The Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association is a continuing education sponsor as approved by the Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training. This course, Leadership and Ethics 09053-00614, has been approved by the POST Board for continuing education credit. Peace officers who successfully complete this course will receive seven (7) hours of continuing education.

This course is approved for two (2) hours under the mandated category of Community and Cultural Diversity and Implicit Bias and the remaining five (5) hours are general credits.
